I’m so glad that I don’t have to find a job even when the company I was working for last March decided to close shop. With so many projects coming in now that I’m a freelancer, my schedule is as busy as when I’m working full time. I like to thank my loyal clients who not only give me projects almost every month but never fails to recommend me to their friends and colleagues. I could say that most of my projects now are through word of mouth. I don’t even advertise and yet I receive plenty of requests which makes me feel so blessed. It helps that I have finally updated my portfolio site so I also receive a few offers from that as well. The best of all, I manage my own time and don’t need to answer to anyone’s rules.

I have had many co-workers who either got fired or resigned because telecommuting is not for them.

Here are the reasons:

It’s just too boring. There’s no looking forward to having a nice lunch with friends. No after office shopping sprees with your girlfriends. No gossips in the pantry area.

It can get really hot at home. I can’t afford to turn on the airconditioner the whole day especially if it needs to be on at night too. Imagine yourself working while sweating or breathing hot air from your monitor.

The bed is just a few steps away. It seems to call your name every hour.

Lots of great movies to watch during day time. TV shows included. The next thing you know, it’s five o’clock and you’re so far from done.

For single people – no chance to meet someone new.

There are so many excuses that you can come up with why you weren’t able to finish your job. There was a brown out, your internet went down, your PC crashed, you had a virus, your phone line is not working, it’s too hot, you’re too lazy, you slept too late.

My plans of renovating our room is still on hold (see here). However, my husband and I made progress in cleaning up our hallway. I haven’t taken any photos yet but everything looks much better now. The books in the bookshelves inside our room can now breathe because I moved half of the contents to the new racks and placed them in the hallway. At first I wanted to categorized the books from favorites to not-so-used to dust gatherers but it was taking me too long. I ended up getting them in tens and just stacked them in any order.

But really, what I want to achieve is this.

My husband promised that we will do this as soon as we move to a bigger place next year. I’m excited! If we’re lucky, I might have a chance to get my own work area too.

I love Mondays! Because it’s still a Sunday in the US, which means only one or two of my co-workers will be online. And that is if they’ve very dedicated or trying to finish a deadline. During Mondays, I have time to re-group, organize my tasks and gather my thoughts. I can work without someone breathing on my back, or in this case, checking on my status through IM every 5 minutes. And I noticed that I can work better, finish my tasks faster and still feel energized to pursue other things.

If only I can wish that it’s Monday all the time. I admit I’m getting stressed every morning whenever I see that my inbox has more than 40 emails. They’re not all for me, most of the time, they’re just an update for a project that I’m part of. However, since I was the last one who updated the project the night before they came in, I’m always expecting that one of the emails will contain either mistakes on my end or new tasks that I have no idea how to do.

I wish I can print a business card that says “Just because I work from home doesn’t mean I’m available 24/7“.

Just like any other employee who works 8-5 daily, I also shut down my computer. I’m mostly done with day-to-day tasks by 5PM but I keep my computer open just in case I want to browse for entertainment purposes or play online with my kid. Clients think I’m still available because I’m online. Most of the time, I try to do their requests even if it’s already 9PM. I do this because I care about their projects. I know that even if it’s not a life and death situation, they seem to think that it is so I do my best to accommodate these requests. Some of them even send three hours worth of work just before my bed time. So we both live in different time zones but that doesn’t mean I have to work the same time as them, unless stated in a contract.

I always get online during the weekends with my YM and Gmail set to invisible. Still, I’d get tons of buzzes and offline messages from clients asking if I can fix something. It’s the weekends people. I have a life too. And again, just like any ordinary employee, I don’t “go to work” during weekends. This means you can’t expect to get something done immediately or call me when I’m trying to spend some quality time with the family.

Like I’ve said, I’m not really strict with the schedule. But please don’t think that I’m a computer just because I work virtually.

… is that you can sleep whenever you want to. In fact, I just woke up thirty minutes ago and I feel so refreshed. Of course, you have to make sure that no other co-workers are online, let alone your boss. It’s always easy to get caught if the message that they sent you an hour ago was still unanswered. Also, make sure that you will only nap if there are no huge deadlines to meet. You could be well rested when you wake up, but it will surely be a long night ahead of you as you try to juggle all the remaining tasks.

It’s not the case today, luckily. Which means I can wrap up around 6PM, play with my daughter and look forward to watching my favorite TV shows tonight. Tuesday night is my TV night and the only day of the week when no one can touch the remote control but me. So while it’s early, I’ll have to finish reviewing this vocational and technical college guide so I can push through with my plans.

One of our client services agent told me he has six designs that need to be updated ASAP. Are you kidding me? Not. Our company has a policy against rush projects but since we are the only ones online, I can’t very well turn him down. It sounded like a very tricky project too so I’ll probably put all the other ‘urgent’ tasks from last week on hold.

I’m still sick by the way but because the agent said the magic word (urgent!), my mind will not rest until I’lI get to it.It’s three days before Christmas and here I am working like the Grinch. I have about twenty million tasks at hand until December 26 and I doubt I can finish half of them in a matter of two days.

I am so thankful for this job. But sometimes, it just gets too much.

Still about my new work. I noticed that even though I’ve been working for three hours straight already, I’m still not close to finishing half of my tasks. I remember when I get about 10-15 tasks from my old company. It will only take me 2-3 hours tops to finish all of them. But now, even if I sacrifice sleep, and even if I am the greatest developer in the whole world, I doubt if I can work like I used to. First, I need to connect via VPN in order to access the files. No matter how fast my computer or Internet is, it will still take about 2-5 minutes for me to download a 30MB psd file. It’s very time consuming.

You’d think I have free time to browse or check old emails while waiting for the files but no. While I’m waiting, I get 3-5 instant messages from co-workers who needed to discuss projects with me before they leave the office. 6AM-9AM is our only chance to meet daily so we make sure to keep in touch. By 10AM, the only thing I’ve done is download/check out files, chat with colleagues and prepare my local for incoming work. By this time, my laptop will give up because of too many browsers and applications open. I will have to restart and open all of them again, eating another 30 minutes or so of my time.
